Guidelines and Manuals on Prevention and Control

  • Dengue: Guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. This publication is intended to contribute to the prevention and control of the morbidity and mortality associated with dengue and to serve as an authoritative reference source for health workers and researchers. These guidelines are not intended to replace national guidelines but to assist in the development of national or regional guidelines. Date: 2009.
  • Dengue hemorrhagic fever: diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. A practical guide to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever. The book has been revised to reflect considerable recent gains in knowledge, particularly concerning methods of laboratory diagnosis and strategies for vector surveillance and control. All dimensions of the global dengue problem – from the characteristics of epidemics to the complexities of diagnosis – are addressed in this concise, yet comprehensive guide. Date: 1997.
  • Comprehensive Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Dengue and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. The guideline is intended to guide national and local-level program managers and public health officials of Member States, as well as other stakeholders, including health practitioners, laboratory personnel, and multisectoral partners, on strategic planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, and strengthening the response to dengue prevention and control in their countries. Scientists and researchers involved in vaccine and antiviral drug development will also find crucial baseline information in this document. Date: 2011.
  • Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever: early recognition, diagnosis and hospital management. An audiovisual guide for health care workers responding to outbreaks. Date: 2006.
  • WHO report on global surveillance of epidemic-prone infectious diseases – Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever. The chapter on dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever contains a background of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever including a brief history, a short description of the transmission process, clinical features, and a number of cases reported to WHO and countries reporting, 1955-1998.
  • Planning Social Mobilization and Communication for Dengue Fever Prevention and Control: A Step-by-Step Guide. This guide presents the basic steps and underlying principles of COMBI (Communication-for-Behavioural-Impact). It is intended for health planners, dengue or vector control program managers and individuals, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and other agencies with interests and/or expertise in developing biological, chemical, environmental, and communication interventions to prevent and control dengue fever. Date: 2004.
  • Manual for Indoor Residual Spraying: Application of Residual Sprays for Vector Control. The objective of this illustrated manual (aimed at pest-control workers) is to ensure the safe and correct application of a residual insecticide to indoor surfaces on which malaria vectors may rest. However, it is also applicable for any other vector-borne diseases where indoor residual spraying would be an appropriate means of vector control. Date 2002.
  • Handbook for Integrated Vector Management. The intention of this handbook on integrated vector management (IVM) is to provide guidance to the managers of vector-borne disease control programs, including comparable officials in health and other sectors involved in vector-borne disease control. The target audience is managers and officials at central, district, and lower administrative levels. The handbook provides background information to complement the Core structure for training curricula on integrated vector management and associated training materials. Date: 2013.

Vaccine Research and Production

  • WHO Working Group on technical specifications for manufacture and evaluation of dengue vaccines, Geneva, Switzerland, 11-12 May 2009.
  • Guidelines for the clinical evaluation of dengue vaccines in endemic areas, WHO/IVB/08.12, September 2008
  • Guidelines for the production and quality control of candidate tetravalent dengue virus vaccines (live). WHO Technical Report Series, No. 932, 2006 Annex 1
  • Report of the Scientific Working Group meeting on Dengue, Geneva, 1–5 October 2006

Strategies and Best Practices

  • Strengthening implementation of the global strategy for dengue fever/dengue hemorrhagic fever prevention and control. Report of the Informal Consultation, 18-20 October 1999.
  • The International Dengue Task Force. Dedicated to the fight against dengue.
  • Best Practices for Dengue Control in the Americas. Environmental Health Project. Date: 2003
  • Improved tools and strategies for the prevention and control of arboviral diseases. A research-to-policy forum. Date: 2018
  • A Toolkit for National Dengue Burden Estimation. This toolkit aims to guide countries on how to best estimate their current burden of dengue by combining existing data from dengue surveillance systems with ongoing research efforts to measure the community burden of dengue. Date: 2018
